Which Neighbourhood Fits You?

Antalya isn't one place — it's three or four very different ones squeezed into a single city. Get this wrong and you'll spend half your trip in a taxi.

Kaleiçi (Old Town)

Roman harbour walls, Ottoman mansions converted into boutique hotels, narrow streets that smell of jasmine in the evenings. This is the Antalya that ends up on postcards. Stays here run €70–180 per night. The catch: you're 8 km from the big beaches and parking is genuinely awful. For couples and solo travellers, though, it's hard to beat.

Lara Beach

The strip of five-star mega-resorts east of the city. Rixos, Titanic, Akra — names that mean enormous waterparks, 12 restaurants, and a beach attendant bringing you cocktails at 11am. All-inclusive pricing starts around €120/night per person but can spike to €300+ in August. Families with kids under 14 will have the time of their lives here. Everyone else might feel slightly trapped.

Konyaaltı

A wide pebble beach running west along a backdrop of the Taurus Mountains. The hotels here are more mid-range (€45–110/night), the vibe is more local Turkish families than package tourists, and the pedestrian promenade actually has decent restaurants. It's also 5 minutes from the city centre by tram — a genuine advantage.

Belek (30 km east)

Technically a separate resort town, but Antalya airport is its gateway. Pine forests, 15+ golf courses, and the most polish resort infrastructure in Turkey. If golf or complete disconnection is the goal, Belek delivers. Prices here are premium — €150–400 per night depending on season.

When to Go and What It Costs

High season runs June through September. August is peak — prices are highest, beaches are crowded, temperatures hit 38–40°C. June and September are the sweet spot: warm enough for swimming, fewer crowds, prices 20–30% lower than August peak.

Winter is mild by European standards (15–18°C) but the resorts largely shut down. If you want to see Kaleiçi without tourists and pay €35 a night for a boutique room — November through February is surprisingly good.

Getting There and Around

Antalya Airport (AYT) is 13 km from the city centre. Taxis to Lara hotels take 20–25 minutes and cost €15–20 officially (agree the price before you get in). The airport tram (AntRay) reaches Konyaaltı and the city centre for about €1.50.

Within the city, the tram is genuinely useful for the Konyaaltı–city axis. For Lara and Belek you'll need a taxi or rental car. Renting a car makes day trips to Termessos, Perge, and Aspendos vastly easier and costs €35–60/day from local agencies at the airport.

Top Sights Worth Leaving the Pool For

The Antalya Museum holds one of Turkey's best collections of Roman and Hellenistic sculpture — two hours well spent, €8 entry. Termessos (35 km inland) is an ancient city in the Taurus Mountains where Alexander the Great gave up and turned back — it's genuinely dramatic, and almost nobody is there mid-week. Aspendos has the best-preserved Roman theatre in the Mediterranean world; performances still happen here in summer.

For beach day trips: Phaselis (45 km) combines Roman ruins with three coves. Cirali (80 km) has a quieter pebble beach, a sea turtle nesting area, and the mythological Chimaera flames flickering from the hillside at night.

Practical Tips

Turkish lira fluctuates, but most hotels in the resort areas price in euros. Pay in local currency when you can — ATMs are everywhere and give decent rates. All-inclusive packages bought through Turkish tour operators (or via international OTAs) are typically 15–25% cheaper than paying at the hotel directly.

Tap water in Antalya is safe for showering but buy drinking water — locals do too. SIM cards from Turkcell or Vodafone TR at the airport give you fast 4G for about €10 for a week.

If you're arriving in August, book 3–4 months ahead for Lara properties. The supply of quality all-inclusives there genuinely runs out.
